On October 2, McMaster University’s Latin American Network (LANMU) celebrated the 6th Latin American Heritage Month in Canada, an annual tribute to Latin American contributions in Canada’s social, cultural, economic, and political spheres.

We celebrated with great food, company, and artistic contributions from the local Hamilton community. We also discussed the urgent need to address disparities faced by Latin American youth in Canada, including disproportionate COVID rates and underrepresentation in STEM. A recent York University study found that Latin American students in the Toronto District School Board have the lowest high school graduation rates and limited access to higher education among ethno-racial communities.

That’s why LANMU and McMaster University are taking action! Notably, we’ve launched the Access Program, providing vital support and scholarships for Latin American/Latinx students. Additionally, the Latin American/Latinx Mentorship Program, initiated in 2023 by LANMU, is tailored to meet the needs of Latin American students and support the growing Latinx population in Canada as they progress through their academic careers, encouraging both personal and professional development. Coupled with the continuing support of the Interdisciplinary Minor in Latin American and Latinx Studies, we’re making sure the Latin American / Latinx community at McMaster is seen and supported.

Our recent event showcased McMaster’s support for Latin American students. Over 70 students from all six faculties attended, underscoring our commitment to addressing disparities and fostering inclusivity. Thanks to everyone that attended! We look forward to several more successful events in the future.
